of these are also available under license in the PRC, however the
information "available in the PRC" does not in any sense
guarantee that the versions circulating are licensed copies though in the
case of mainstream films and documentaries legal copies should be
obtainable with a little effort. Note also
that versions of these DVDs available from international retailers such as
Amazon.com generally do not include Chinese subtitles. Therefore we
recommend that purchasers check the audio and subtitle options with your
retailer before buying.
NOTE ON FORMATS: DVD generally have a choice of subtitles: Off, English, Chinese Simplified
(PRC) and Chinese Traditional (HK, Taiwan). With some DVD titles a choice of audio may be available: English, Mandarin (North
PRC, Taiwan), very rarely Cantonese (Guangdong, HK). VCDs are less flexible - unless the left speaker and right speaker have separate English and Mandarin channels. On VCD Chinese subtitles cannot be turned off. Because the playing time of VCD is less than DVD most films cover 2VCD, though the Luke-based "Jesus Film" is a single VCD.VHS videos are now redundant: almost no one in HK, PRC and Taiwan has VHS players, and if they do they are often incompatible.
